I am currently a Ph.D. student in Nick Fisher’s radioecology lab.  I came to MSRC after having received a B.S. in Zoology from the University of Washington, followed by a M.S. in Marine Biology from Nova Southeastern University.  My research interests center around the role that marine bacteria play in the biogeochemical cycling of trace metals and metalloids in the ocean.  Heterotrophic marine bacteria account for a large portion of particulate surface area in seawater and may play an important role in the cycling of a variety of particle-reactive metals.  My current research involves the uptake and sorption of various metals by marine bacteria in order to assess the phase partitioning of these metals as well as their potential to be introduced into marine food webs.  This work involves lab and field work in which metal accumulation is assessed through radiotracer methodology and through synchrotron-based x-ray fluorescence microscopy.
