VHSV in NYS marine waters

Another of our monitoring efforts involves the incidence of viral hemorrhagic septicaemia virus (VHSV) in the marine environment of New York State, namely Long Island Sound and the Hudson River. Viral hemorrhagic septicaemia virus is an extremely important issue within the Great Lakes and has caused large mortality events in several different species over the past few years. The NY state marine environment as a possible source of VHSV has not been investigated. Through collaboration with Dr. Paul Bowser at Cornell University, we plan on investigating the prevalence of VHSV in local bait and predatory fish species of the NYS marine habitat.
