Alicia Brown
Alicia is interested in aquatic diseases which affect local species, specifically Atlantic Sturgeon. She is also interested in investigating how anthropogenic effects and global climate change affect host-pathogen interactions. Alicia works under the supervision of Dr. Mark Fast. Alicia
Soren Dahl
Soren received his Master’s degree from the Marine Science Research Center in August of 2006. His thesis research, as a New York Sea Grant Scholar with Allam, investigated the transmission of QPX disease in hard clams through laboratory trials and field assays. Soren is now a student in the PhD program and he continues to work on the effect of environmental factors on QPX disease in clams. Soren also maintains an interest in conservation which has lead to involvement with the Student Conservation Association, the Blue Ocean Institute and volunteering with The Nature Conservancy; stocking hard clam spawner sanctuaries in Great South Bay. Yuk-Ting Lau
Joyce obtained her B.S. degree from Stony Brook University (SBU) and received her M.S. degree from Northeastern University. She returned to SBU and started her PhD studies at SoMAS in Fall 2010 under Allam's supervision. She is particularly interested in the investigation of the synergistic effects of marine contaminants and global climate change on hard clam immunity and resistance to infectious diseases.


Ewelina Rubin
Ewelina received her Master’s degree in Marine Biology from Nova Southeastern University (Fort Lauderadale, FL) before joining the PhD program at SoMAS in fall 2010. Her thesis research will be focused on the molecular mechanisms of the QPX infection process in hard clams. Specifically, she is interested in the characterization of QPX virulence factors, including molecules that enable the invasion, survival and propagation of the parasite inside clam tissues and allow it to suppress or modify clam immune system. She is also interested in studying QPX population genetics in order to better understand its reproductive biology and to estimate the genotypic diversity throughout its geographic range. Finally, she hopes to answer questions about the genetic bases for the variation of pathogenicity among QPX strains. More information about that project can be found at Allam's

Kailai Wang
Kailai received her Master's degree of Biochemistry and Molecular biology from Dalian University of Technology (China). She joined SoMAS's Ph.D program in fall 2009 and since that time began working at theMADL under the supervision of Allam on hard clam immunity. She is interested in the effects of environmental factors on hard clam immunity and defense mechanisms and resistance against the infectious protist QPX. Her research particularly focuses on the effect of pathogenic and environmental stresses on transcriptional and post-transcriptional regulations of signaling pathways of innate immunity in hard clam. Mark Sokolowski
After initially coming to Stony Brook University with an interest in aquatic animal diseases caused by parasites, Mark's current interest has moved slightly into the field of parasite ecology and biodiversity. Under the direction of Dove, his research focuses on the distribution of parasite species and how these distributions scale up to communities of parasites within and amongst host. This research intersects with the biodiversity of the parasite community and how that diversity is partitioned in a host community. He is still interested in the pathology that a host endures in the host-parasite relationship from the aspect of the amount, measured in bio-volume, of parasites needed to cause disease or death.
